He probably knew that the ciphers were going to attract a lot of attention, especially after how the first one was cracked fairly quickly so I think he might have used them to distract the general public, but more importantly law enforcement and the media, away from some other aspects of his crimes.Ĭonsider it for a minute: if you're someone who's still relatively new to the Zodiac case, there's probably two things you know for sure about it. I think he wanted his later ciphers to be a red herring for his case to cover for some other stuff he was doing. Remember he had to mask the sound of a shotgun blast if he lived in close proximity to people at one point. Single, lone male, aged 25-40, flexible occupation with own hours (business owner/tradesman/doctor who does house calls etc.?), owner of a white dog and someone with the means to bring in and keep children without suspicion - isolated house, no neighbours or at least a driveway/garage shielding him from the loading of bodies and unloading of live kids. God knows, as a child and even now as an adult, I pat every pup I come across so it's wouldn't be a surprise that all those kids would either. It sounds like the cops think he had an occupation that allowed travel and gave him flexible hours, but also one that gained children's trust easily - but it could also be someone with flexible hours with a rouse to lure children, I read that white dog hairs were found on all the victims so that's probably his way in."Hey kids, wanna come pat the pretty pup?". Sounds like a single male, I suspect someone in his mid 20s to late 30s since that's the age most killers start at - it's rare for someone to start older than that. Shooting his 3rd victim after perhaps finding out she had a fear of guns also seems like prolonging terror infliction on her. Like feeding the last child fried chicken, sounds like he was toying with the kid and giving him a little bit of hope of release before smothering him. That's why only 1 victim had confirmed sexual assault and the different killing methods.įeeding them and keeping them just let him prolong their hope/terror cycle more than anything, since I suspect that's what he got off on rather than simply murdering them ASAP post abduction.

Honestly, killer sounds like he got off on the torture and the placement of bodies in full view of people then the actual killing. I think if the 1st is accepted to be the bludgeoning (early Jan 1976) then the 2nd was the strangulation with rope (Feb 1976), 3rd was the shotgun and 4th, 5th (March 1977) were the smotherings.
